That's because the Logitech shifter is modeled after an automobile shifter not a truck shifter. The gears in a semi truck are set up completely different than in a car.
Everything depends on the gearbox/layout combination you choose.

[edit]
This is nonsensical, the shifters are exactly the same for truck or car, it's a H pattern gate, there's nothing more to it than that. The game takes care of the rest - it has nothing whatsoever to do with the hardware.

[edit2]
Forgot to mention - If it's sending random *key* presses, then check to make sure you're not loading up a profile (logitech software) that has keypresses assigned to the shifter positions - or that you don't have keypresses assigned to the shifter positions in-game 'Options --> Keys & Buttons'

Ok, damnit sorry I'm a bit distracted... When I said above that you don't need to change anything... I was talking about the shifter position assignments, specifically... Of course you need to set up the splitter and range buttons etc as per your requirements.
Yes, this box should only be checked if you are using actual toggle switches/buttons for the splitter and range valves. For keyboard keys and M/A buttons (such as on your steering wheel) it should be unchecked.
At least my reply was non-nonsensical. Hehehe, I couldn't resist
Well actually, so did I, but I left my reply intact as it might possibly be helpful to somebody... also, no deliberate offence intended to Old Hippie.
No offense taken, I guess I should have explained it better. I just meant that, for example, if you choose an Eaton Fuller 18 speed setup that 1st gear will not be where 1st gear is on the actual shifter, 1st will actually be where 3rd is on the actual shifter. When I first got my TH8A it was very confusing until I learned the different shift patterns. The only way it will match is if you just choose "Range" instead of an actual Eaton Fuller setup.
