Corsairs #1

The Corsair's Captive

Rate this book
A pirate doesn’t ask for permission - he takes.

When I see the delicate human female collared and enslaved by the smuggler I’m about to swindle, I do what any male would do.

I take her from him. It’s what I do best, after all.

Now Fran’s mine, and I’m never giving her up. On board my spaceship, she’ll be safe. She’ll wear my clothes, eat my food, and sleep in my bed. I’ll keep her safe from a galaxy that wishes her harm. But my sweet Fran wants nothing more than to return to Earth. How can I take her home when she holds my heart in her dainty, five-fingered hands?

This story stands completely alone and is only marginally connected to the Ice Planet Barbarians series and Prison Planet Barbarian . You do not need to read those books in order to follow this one.

Mhmmm you heard right... Alien motherfucking pirates
description

Get on board the alien smut y'all A pirate doesn’t ask for permission—he takes.
Kivian sees a poor human slave and knows that he has to save her
“Time to go,” Tarekh says impatiently.
I pay no attention. He can wait a moment. She’s more important. ‘You can stay here,’ I answer“

Our female lead Fran was so fierce and brave. Knowing she was literally out of her world and depth....but kept sassing the living fuck out of Kirvian
“Yeah, well, it makes me feel safe,” she says, and jams another pillow between us.
“Do whatever you like, if it’ll make you feel better.”
The next pillow goes over my face, and then I can’t help but burst out laughing.
My Fran is a fiery one. I like that.”

description

I've decided... alien smut is fun! *chanting begins in the background* This book is the kinda fun sexy romance that doesn't take itself too seriously which makes it all the more enjoyable. We all KNOWWW this is soo out there but the author writes developed characters in INSANE situations for us to enjoy, and a hot alpha alien to go with. so enjoy the ride

My only regret is that this was a novella and not a full length. Some of it felt rushed and I wanted Kivian and Fran to get the full story that they deserved.

I mean listen to this guy...how could you not want more?
“How can she not fall for me? I’m incredibly charming. She’s just stubborn, my Fran. She’ll come around.”

He is just so cocky and arrogant...but it fucking works RIPPPPP MEEEe

description

I enjoyed how we got both POV, especially the alien captain who is both mischievous but knows he responsible for his crew and now this little human. His internal dialogue is hilarious and their banter somehow always revolves the stupidest things
“Cards?” I give her a strange look. “You play with cards? Little pieces of paper? Why would you do something so foolish?”
“Are you kidding me? You guys play with sticks! Freaking sticks! Now who’s the foolish one?”

description description

But he is also as possessive and I guess I have a thing for Blue Horned Alien Heros....good to know
“Kiss?”
“A meeting of mouths. It’s a show of affection amongst humans.”
“Care to demonstrate?” I give her my best lazy grin”

I absolutely loved this story, it was so much lighter than the first and i adored the banter - flirting
“Ah, Fran, my sweet. That’s a baseless worry.”
“It is?”
“Yes. I’d never dump you at the nearest station. Their docking fees are tremendously expensive.”

I love a practical man

description

Overall I really enjoyed their story and characters, though I wish it had been longer to be more developed. The book didn't take itself too seriously so she gave us fun characters to match the tone which made me love them even more and just totally accept the book's premise. It was just sexy and so goddamn funny.
“She relaxes against me for a long moment, silent, and then punches my shoulder with one small fist. “You assholes left me behind.”
I want to laugh, except she’s truly upset. “It was for your safety, I promise.”

Can’t wait for the rest of the crew, and in general more alien pirates.

This book is one of those that even if they're part of the IPB series, doesn't happen on the Ice Planet!

While I didn't like the other one, Prison Planet Barbarian, I liked this very much!

Why? because of the MCs!

The corsair, Kivian, is wonderfully fun! He's internal dialogue is hilarious as much as it is when he speaks! Just great!!!
He's possesive as all the other BBBs, but at the same time he know that he cannot act on it! He knows that he must be super patient. That he must act with utmost care when interacting with Fran. And he does just that! Incredibly great!

Fran, on the other hand is justly cautious. She's been sold as slave, threatened with rape, treated like an animal... what more she can expect from life?
It's obvious that she's afraid and sullen.

But, with Kivian's patience is what it takes to reach Fran's soul.

If you want a fun, witty and sweet SF romance, read this!

A space pirate alien romance ?? Yes, please! I saw this was available on audio from my library, so I decided to give it a try. This is super short (less than 200 pages) and I really would have loved for it to be longer. I enjoyed how our heroine was captured and held as a prisoner, and our hero saw her and immediately knew that she was his. However, he was never gross or overpowering in any way. He was very patient with her and never forcefully took anything with her. I loved how Fran slowly fell for him and had no idea why and was freaked out. I mean, he's a giant blue alien. But I don't blame her for falling for him! As always with Ruby Dixon's alien romances, they have fun discovering each other's physical differences and things definitely turn steamy. This was just so fun and I only wish it was longer. I am excited to continue on in this series!

Space pirates!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤💙❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: ☹️🙃☺️😍
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The Hero: Kivian - He is a space pirate (Corsair) who owns a ship called the Dancing Fool. His most recent job has changed and the buyer needs more than twice the number of crystals than he originally ordered. So when he meets up with the smuggler they are dealing with he plans on swindling the guy. Though things change after Kivian sees the human female the smuggler is holding captive.

The heroine: Fran - She woke up to find she was snatched from her bed and sold into slavery by aliens. She is currently held by a tentacled master, whom she hates with everything in her. She is constantly trying to get away to no avail. She was treated like livestock when she was first captured, now that she was sold, she feels she in for something much worse. She plans to fight to the death rather than let the alien rape her.

The Story: Kivian likes to make sure the people he deals with always underestimate him. So he has a ship with a funny name and he dresses in finery, keeping his hair immaculate so they think he is a wealthy idiot playing at being a pirate. He recently rescued his brother, an infamous assassin from a prison planet and was surprised that his fearsome brother had taken a weak human as a mate. Even more so that his brother is now a father and is happily living on a farm on Risda 3.

Kivian is prepared for his meeting, but isn’t prepared to see a human captive that looks a lot like his sister in law. He knows from the start that this female is his and immediately plans to take her with him when he leaves. Kivian is pretty good at his job and plays his part well. He is also intelligent and plays the long game.

I love that these Corsairs books take place on ships or space stations. I sometimes get sick of alien worlds and like the change of pace. The world building was great, I love that they drink refreshment bubbles at the bar which float around the table and they just bite them out of the air. It sounds fun.

The story is told in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Hollie Jackson and Mason Lloyd who do the narration for many of Ruby Dixon’s other books. I have listened to most of them and enjoy the narration done by these two. They don’t have the best voices in the business, but they found their niche in these alien romance books and they do them so well.

Fran and Kivian

Blue horny pirates and abducted human females ready to be sold in the black market of the vast Space. Human girls are exotic. They are like pets. Weird looking, soft and easily broken. They are perfect for the kinky aliens who prefer their toys weak and easy to be broken.

Kivian and his men are Mesakkah, i.e. big, blue, with horns and sharp pointy teeth and a tail. They look like blue devils. They are knowledgeable, travellers, fighters, lovers. And last but not least, they are pirates. With their ship, the Dancing Fool, they travel all over the universe. They steal, they fight, they are the best friends. And they never hurt females.

Kivian is the captain and the boss. He loves nice and expensive clothes, things, furnishing. When he sees Fran for the first time, he is not impressed. She is just a little uncivilised human after all (like his sister in law) and a slave, but he realises that she belongs to him. Mesakkah men can recognise their mates straight away. So he steals her and then he just has to convince her that his intentions are noble by lying some more and by charming her to death.

“He wasn’t kind to her. I couldn’t leave her there with him.” Everything in me rebels against the very idea.
“Not our fight,” Sentorr says.
“It is now. She belongs to me.”
Tarekh’s eyes widen. “It’s like that, then? You’re keeping a human pet, then?”
They misunderstand. I scrub a hand down my face, wondering how much I should admit to. “Not exactly. She’s her own person, not a pet. She’s just as intelligent as you or I, and I don’t plan on owning her or forcing her to submit to me like Jth’Hnai wanted to do to her.”
Tarekh laughs. “Then you mean…”
I shrug. I don’t feel the need to answer him. Not exactly. Not when Alyvos is giving me such a horrified look. He’ll just have to get used to the idea.

The rest of the crew (Sentorr, Alyvos and Tarekh) will also meet and fall in love with a human girl in the next books.

Wicked humour, good smut, interesting story, well developed characters.
Not exactly a spinoff from Ice Planet Barbarians since it takes place in space and the Mesakkah are more civilised and tech geniuses and less Barbarians. If you have read Barbarian’s Choice and you remember Mardok, you will understand what I mean.

Totally loved Kivian!! He's an alien pirate that has just met his mate. Unfortunately she is the pet/slave of his opponent in a high stakes poker style challenge. Kivian must win her and save her from the clutches of her evil owner.

I loved that these aliens have huge horns, a tail, and ridges on their junk along with a spur! I like my aliens well hung and different.

My only complaint would be the middle dragged because the H & h were horny and wanted each other but were afraid to admit it. That got old fast and there was no need for it. I would have enjoyed more than one sex scene near the end of the book. At least give me some panty soaking foreplay.

➕ What I liked :

Bipoc main character.

The heroine was a feisty character but not in a cantankerous way.

The hero was not an alpha and was rather carefree/free-spirited‎.

A lighter story than others in this universe.

The basis/premise of the story is OK.

➖ What I disliked :

Even for a novella length story… the main characters lacked some relationship development.(The romantic build-up and chemistry was kind of rushed and instalove.)

Both main characters needed more depth and backstory.

Not much action or drama and the plot was kind of thin (some little parts of the book/story were interesting but others were rushed and lacked depth etc.)

Formulaic in the character description/character choice: small “delicate” human and Huge hulking/buff alien.
(Would have been/Would be really interesting to maybe see much more variety in the character descriptions/character choices... This auhtor is more diverse/inclusive than many other authors in the sci-fi romance genre… but there are still very many of the main characters that are very similar in looks/appearance and/or size/shape/height and age in this series and universe so they can easily blend together and become formulaic/monotonous/predictable.)

Repetitive.
(Especially with the words delicate/fragile and little and how these words are used to describe the heroine in different ways.)

Cringey.
(The hero calls the heroine “little one” 20+ times in this story and that is super cringey every time… he also calls her little and little human same with those words …..cringey.
(She is a adult woman so those words are kind of demeaning words even if it is a pet name/nickname… he has another nickname/pet name ("my sweet") he calls her as well which is much less cringey and I wish he would have called her that more or instead of the other cringey/demeaning pet name/nickname.)

****Note to self: Do Not re-read this book again.****

3 Stars!

RD has done it again. We have been to the IcePlanet, to prison, and now to space. She couldn't stop there; oh no! She had to make the aliens space pirates that steal from bad guys! I swear, her creativity has no limits.

Other than the concept, I loved the MCs. Kivian was an amazing hero. The way he swooped in and saved Fran - SWOON! And speaking of Fran, she was unbelievably brave. She knew that she was going to be used and abused, but she did not hold back her thoughts. When her and Kivian start their relationship, the chemistry will blow you away!

So why the three stars, Whitney? Well, I feel like this could have been a full length novel. With it being a novella, I feel like Kivian and Fran didn't get the story they deserved. Some of it felt rushed and forced. Honestly, I truly believe that Ruby even acknowledged it in the Author's Notes as she hinted that there will be more books following the space pirates as Kivian had a crew that needs mates. She has a problem! She wants every character to have their own story. And while I love that because I get to read more awesome stories, I just don't want the stories to suffer because of that problem. You feel me?

It is probably not fair to the story that I have rated it 3 stars, but I can't shake the feeling that this story had more potential. However, that shouldn't stop you from reading it. Ruby Dixon is the Queen of paranormal romances. You won't be too disappointed. Promise!

Although this is number 17 in the Ice Planet Barbarian series, it can be read completely separately and is more like a duology between this book and Prison Planet Barbarian. It’s all set in the same world as Ice Planet Barbarians, but instead of being in the icy planet of NotHoth with our beloved and primitive barbarians. Instead we are in the wide universe, with aliens that are a sister race to those stranded on NotHoth, the difference being that they weren’t stranded on an ice planet a thousand years ago.

I loved Kivian. An alien hero with a sense of humour and a fabulous wardrobe; we’ve hit the jackpot ladies and gents! Don’t let his obsession with the latest threads full you though, Kivian is a pirate… unless you happen to be Fran, a human woman stolen by aliens and sold into slavery. Also, Kivian’s mate.

This was a novella length story but jam packed with humour and sexy times between Kivian and Fran, I can’t wait to see what Dixon does next in this series.

4 1/2 stars Loved it, but of course I did. Not sure if I liked the first book, which is this heroes brother or this one more. I love that they are both very different and that the heroes and heroines in both books are different as well. Like all the books from Ruby Dixon's "blue alien" series I can't wait for the next one and I'm so glad there are many more to follow in all the 3 series about these aliens. I say keep them coming because I can never seem to have enough.

OH, RUBY DIXON! YOU NEVER FAIL TO DELIGHT ME. I just ADORE these big blue guys and can't get enough of them. (Absolutely no complaints over the idea of the rest of Kivian's crew finding their special someone. None. BRING IT!)

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is Kivian and Fran's book. Kivian of the flirty smiles and pleasant demeanor. Kivian who is DETERMINED to give Fran time to get over what happened to her and turn to him of her own free will. Kivian who is a hoot and a half. I just love men who enjoy their job, don't you?

Fran, quite naturally, doesn't take to him at first. Considering he won her in a game of chance (one he manipulated quite nicely, by the way), that's to be expected. But Kivian treats her her with care and respect until she's chomping at the bit to get a little frisky with him. By that point, of course, they're both in so deep there's no escaping.

Romance in the stars, man. You gotta love it.

I still love the big, blue guys and the women they get all possessive over. I like Kivian's surly crew and their love of danger. I am 100% ready for more.

A sexy pirate and human captive

I absolutely loved this story. It was a much lighter story than the first book with Jutari and Chloe. Kivian is Jutari's younger brother who rescues him and Chloe from the prison planet. Kivian is also a pirate who finds and steals Fran while he is stealing cargo from the slave-owner who bought Chloe on the black market. I enjoy Fran's feisty character and Kivian's secret love of nice clothes.

I am looking forward to reading about the romances of the rest of Kivian's crew.

This was a nice little spinoff book of Ice Planet Barbarians. That series has gotten very repetitive but still ok reads. We read about this pirates brother in a previous spinoff. The author is going to write a book for each of the crew on this ship. I'll be reading them.

QuickShot Review
If you need your sci-fi rom crack fix, can I introduce you to my dealer, I mean fave author, Ms. Ruby Dixon?

This is an offshoot of her Planet Blue Balls series, but it is not necessary to read that long running series to read this one. It’s got all the elements I’ve come to expect. Hot blue alien (but now they’re pirates!) ? Check. Human heroine in danger in a strange new world? Check. A dash of danger and some hot sex? Check and check. Is it very familiar? Yes. But hey, I’m good with that. Ms. Dixon gives me what I want in a slightly dangerous but very safe in all the ways that count kind of way and when I need that fix I know who to call. Or, in this case, buy. If you like a bit of sci-fi with your sweet romance, you may enjoy this.

I have no idea why this is listed as IPB #17, it is certainly not....It is Prison Planet Barbarian #2 (PPB). Needs to be fixed.

OK for review, it was fine - more than fine actually, I enjoyed it. I didn't like #1, I never finished Jutari and Chloe's story. I like this one better. Kivian and Frah (strange name there) are much more fun couple than Jutari and Chloe. Reminded me bit of Liz and Rahosh - my fav couple of IPB series.

Kivian rescued Frah from a certain slavery fate and took her into his ship. He was charming, romantic and definite flirt and of course Pirate! Reminded me bit of Jack Sparrow

I am also not sure with blurb of this book -
A pirate doesn’t ask for permission - he takes.

The way he treated Frah was with love and respect. No taking anything from her...It was definitely heart warming...

I thought they are going to take retirement out of Piracy and settle in farm like Jutari and Chloe but I am happy to say nothing boring for them - really adventurous couple, the way it should be

3 Estrellas!

I don't why I even try to act like I'm surprised that I loved Ruby Dixon's book. Because I'm truly not. When I grab one of her books, I know I will have an amazing time. And I did.
Kivian was a smart-ass and charmed my pants off right from the beginning, and Fran was adorable when she was putting Kivian in his place.
I'm so happy Ruby Dixon decided there will be a series because I kinda fell in love with the whole crew.

The Corsair’s Captive is part of the Corsairs series, there is one book that ties the Ice Planet series, Book 0 and you must read that before you read this one if you want to full feels of the brothers.

I was really surprised on how short this book is! I guess this series are novellas because it looks like all the books are short. Anyhow I did the audio version.

There are pros and cons to the audio version. First off, the cover is so misleading, you would think this is a smutty book, but nope, it’s a slow burn novel. I happen to like slow burn books in audio format so that worked out for me.

What didn’t work out for me are the narrators. Gosh I hate to say this but it was just down to poor casting. Sometimes you can have great narrators that can read well and do transitions well. Which they did, but the actual voice didn’t match to what I thought the characters would sound like.

I thought the male narrator didn’t match the Hero’s voice what so ever. He had such a laid back causal voice that it doesn’t match the alpha male voice I have pictured in my head. I thought the female was fine, but I could have preferred someone else. That is my personal opinion.

The story itself was fine. I guess I had a problem with the length being so short and there wasn’t much character development to get me sucked into the story. The whole time the Hero respected the Heroine’s space was like… I dunno, so anti-alpha Hero. He was just a nice guy I guess.

Overall, it was an okay read, just not a favorite by Ruby Dixon.

Kivian win’s Fran in a hand of sticks and that’s not even the crazy part.

She is a human slave who was with an ooli playboy who is keeping her as a pet when Kivian meets her. He is instantly drawn to her soft skin and beautiful silky hair and that’s all it takes to know she is his.

His race the Mesakkah know what the want and when they find a mate it’s over. This will be his forever love even if she doesn’t know it.

They spend their days playing sticks, chilling on his ship for the next few weeks avoiding the cops 👮‍♀️.

You knoowwww and then they fall dangerously in love "Beyoncé style"

This book is an adorable slow burn that is sure to make your panties melt and make your heart swoon. I live for this kind of romance and it doesn’t hurt that he is 7 foot tall and he’s got ridges 🍆🍆🍆🍆.
