Keyboard and mouse do not respond

XPS 400 about a year old.  Came with a wireless mouse and keyboard.  They stopped responding.  The keyboard will not work in the startup either, so I cannot go into the bios settings.
Dell replaced with blue tooth wireless keyboard and mouse.  These will not work.

I took a working "wired" keyboard and mouse but they will not work either.  Cannot try PS2 because the computer is USB only.  I've tried every USB port on the system front and back.

Ideas?
Thank you in advance.

Could be your usb hubs went bad.  May want to pick up a pci usb card and see what happens.

This may sound funny.
Try flea power.
Unplug power from the computer and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Plug it back in, and use the wired keyboard and mouse plugged into the usb ports in the back.
Try that and come back to us,
Mike

I have a 4 month old XPS 400.  My USB keyboard/mouse have stopped working for the second time.  The first time dell tech support was able to get me into the Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as the PC booted.  We found some ghost stuff in the mouse and keyboard files that needed to be deleted.  I rebooted the PC plugged in the keyboard and mouse and all was well.
2 days ago my mouse/keyboard suddenly stopped working.  So I tried entering the Safe Mode and this time the PC isn't responding.  I called Dell XPS support and they want to send me a new keyboard and mouse.  Then if that doesn't work they will schedule an "in house" service call to replace the motherboard.
I have access to some PS/2 keyboards/mouse at work and have PS/2 ports.  Do you think I can use them to break into the PC so I can get to the device Manager and by-pass the USB ports?
Thanks
Tom

should work as long as you have a ps/2 connector on your pc.

Got home from work yesterday afternoon and UPS have delivered a new DELL keyboard/mouse.  I plugged it in (power off) then powered up the CPU.  Nothing, same issues and message "Keyboard not detected" and still not able to use the keyboard to enter the SAFE MODE.
So I recalled something one of our office IT guys did.  I powered down the CPU, unplugged the new USB keyboard/mouse, switched off the surge protector then pressed and held the ON/OFF switch for about 30 seconds.  I then reconnected the USB keyboard/mouse and powered up the CPU.  BINGO, as the PC booted a small box popped up at the bottom of the screen by the clock that said HID device detected.
Both the keyboard and mouse are working just fine.
Can any one explain what my PC did and how this simple procedure solved my problem???
Thanks
Tom

Amazing!  I did this and it worked!
Somehow, as I was installing drivers etc for various usb devices on my new vista xps 710, I managed to make all usb ports inoperative, making it impossible to do anything.  (Like locking one's keys in one's car.)  Unplugging and holding down the power button 30 secs allowed me to get into my xps again.  Now, we'll at least be able to diagnose what the culprit was.

Yes, the trick mentioned above allows me to boot up and have my keyboard and mouse recognized, and all my other usb devices working as well..... for a while.  Then, after some time, they all stop working and the only way I can get them working again is to power off the pc, unplug the power, hold down the start button, plug in the power, & restart.
Anybody got any idea why all usb devices would stop working?  I can't figure out what's causing the problem.
Ken
