Is it possible to get a different laptop charger?
I have this M17 Alienware laptop from 2008 that I am modifying, upgrading cpu ram etc, and I would really like to get a normal charger for it. This thing is like a brick, just about as heavy and big lol. Is it possible to find something smaller that will still charge my laptop and not start a fire?
Charger model: 0405B20220
Input: 100-240V, 50-60Hz, 3A
Output: 20V-11A

The system needs an OEM adapter to charge the battery, so you're limited to what Dell supplies -- and the power requirements are not going to allow for a lower-capacity adapter.

Yes the 220W is correct, but all those chargers have something like 17A, where mine has 3A. So I don't think that would work right? Please correct me if I am wrong. I did notice that when I search for low Amp chargers they usually are big bricks...

Hi @Coolhandluke67 thank you for sharing question, please revisit your opening post for input & output. There is option of going to OEM Alienware M17 Parts & Upgrades to purchase Dell 7.4 mm barrel 240 W AC Adapter with 2meter Power Cord - United States .

This is a different m17 alienware laptop. It is a bit confusing, why they have the same model nr for 2 different computers is beyond me. My laptop is from 2008, and weighs probably 3 times more then that m17 laptop which is more modern. I need a charger for my m17 laptop from 2008.

Hi @Coolhandluke67 agree it is confusing to have same model ID for 2 different computers. Please click on Product Support so that Dell can identify your 2008 Model and Revision number. Thank you.

I do not see a Dell Alienware laptop that was released in 2008? I wonder if yours was one of the Legacy pre-Dell Alienware Laptops?

I wanted to do that when I posted, but I didn't see any option for uploading pictures. However I found someone else who is selling the same one I have. Below is the link.

My mistake, 2009 not 2008. It is the top one, M17x R1 from 2009

Hi @Coolhandluke67 thank you for sharing update complete with link to pictures.
The message header includes click on camera icon to insert pictures.
Your link to pre-Dell Alienware M17-R1 system has barrel connector for laptop, does your ac adapter (charger) power cord also have barrel connector? If yes, please check to determine if barrel connector has O/D 7.4mm and I/D 5.0mm with central pin wire, see following image.

My friend has the computer/charger at the moment, he is helping me upgrade it. I will check the barrel size when I get it back. Seems promising, thank you! BUT how do you know for sure this is not for the newer M17 laptop? Also it doesn't say how many amp's that charger has. Would this one below also work ↓↓↓

That's a third party charger -- it may run the system but will not charge the battery.

Hi @Coolhandluke67 thank you for charging update.
Amazon gives extra purchase protection and vendor guarantees that it is compatible with Dell Alienware M17 . Advert says Amperage 12.3 Amps, and Wattage 240 watts. All that remains is to check that 2009 Alienware M17 laptop dc-in port has the correct barrel connector with central pin wire. Purchase OEM ac adapter (charger) is recommended because laptop onboard protective circuit may reject third party ac adapter (or battery) to prevent damage.
