Is there any solution to the ill fitting power cord problem??

My inspiron 6000 Notebook has the ill fitting powercord problem..Ii've read about this problem a million times..one dell associate here on the boards hinted at a solution to another poster and was going to share the fix 'privately"..I posted to the thread and was totally ignored.

I have no warranty left, so I can't find a number I can call to ask a simple question without being charged..heck, I can'te find find an email address to ask a technician!!

I just want to know if there's a fix for this problem...even if there's an alternate way to charge the battery..becuae the power cord does NOT fit in the computer..and I've tried four power cords. ...they just are not made to fit correctly. I don't think I should have to pay to find out, since I"ll wind up paying for whatever replacement part I need, if it exists.

So if anyone has this top secret information, I would really appreciate knowing....thanks!

There are two possible fixes:

If the mainboard is not damaged, have the jack replaced.  Cost, about $150;  you need a shop with the equipment and expertise to do a good soldering job.

The other option:  replace the mainboard;  with labor, this will run more on the order of $400-500.

I have an Inspiron 600m that has a similar problem.  My power cord stopped "fitting" after the laptop fell off my bed.  I had to wiggle the cord for about 5 minutes to get it to charge, but now it completely doesn't fit.  I know the AC adaptor is okay because my girlfriend's computer charges fine with it.  The only other solution I can think of would be to buy a port replicator.  I believe these actually have their own power supply, so the laptop would work when plugged into the port replicator (also known as a docking station.)  I don't know if this will also charge your battery, but maybe someone else knows that answer.  (It really doesn't matter for me because my battery is completely dead and I don't feel like buying a new one).  Even if you buy the port replicator from Dell, it's only about $80 bucks, which is significantly cheaper than any other option out there.  Like I said, I actually haven't ordered one yet, so I can't attest to it charging the battery, but if it does, it might be a better option.

Good luck.
