Hello,

Running a over 10 year old Noctua D14 with some later added RGB fans now. With my 7800X3D I get over 83C with Cinebench.
Sneakypeet form TPU makes reviews for over at Tweaktown and I checked that the Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX XT, 360mm AIO has lowest temps on his up to date cooler temp comparision chart.
The D14 is not optimal anymore for Ryzen CPUs since I heard you need a cooler with somewhat convex plate/block to get best contact.
What makes me sceptical is that the AIO I want to get is from 2020 and thus might not be optimal too anymore.
Am I wrong and if yes is there any newer AIO I should look into?

No need to buy an AIO for 7800X3D, the compromises can make sense for high wattage parts if you're unable or unwilling to build a custom loop, and therefore do watercooling properly, but your CPU essentially never uses more than 80 watts.

Go for a newer Thermalright air cooler for a budget pick, or if you're comfortable with H150i ELITE CAPELLIX prices, the Noctua D15 G2, which should net a decent 5-10 C improvement over a D14, considering it's 4 C better than the D15, which is stronger than the D14. Noise profile of the D15 G2 is excellent too, which doesn't reflect in raw dBA readings.

Even something as simple as replacing your thermal paste could net 1-2 C.

I notice you're using LED fans on your D14, so these likely perform worse than the stock fans, too.

I've had my Corsair Hydro H150i ELITE CAPELLIX RGB 360 since 2021 and its still going great. I've had no temp problems running games in Ultra etc., and i'm not looking at upgrading or replacing it soon.

And?

Do you use your computer only to run synthetic benchmarks? Or do you use it to do real work that doesn't load the CPU to such unrealistic levels?

Not much else that heavy gaming. Ordered the D15 G2 to get my D14 its earned retirement. Have that cooler since Intel 3570k times. Also as far as I can tell my CPU doesnt boost to max frequency ATM

I get only 3C cooler in Cinebench with a 360mm AiO and Arctic P12 Max fans.

I wouldn't recommend changing coolers unless you don't care about the money and want that few degrees, but if you do make a change- better to get an ID-Cooling FX360 Pro for $60.

I'm not saying these are the best, contrary to Sneakypete, but someone else is.

That 83C is on single core run or multi core?
If it’s on single then you can’t do much about it unless you install some exotic cooling device that keeps CPU IHS very cool, below ambient temp.

To give you an example on my system…
5900X
PowerLimit(PPT): 163W
CPU cooler: ArcticFreezer-II 420mm
Ambient temp 27C

Running CB R23/24 multi core with 162-163W constant power the temp (peak and avg) hovers around 67-69C.
Playing games with an average power around 95-100W the peak temp is hitting 75-80C and avg is below 60C. Of course the AIO runs lower on gaming according to my custom curve.

The point is the Ryzen CPUs boost aggressively (rapid boost bursting) on single core and on low/medium loads and some tiny parts of the cores inevitably are getting hot.
The so called hotspots.

This is the nature of these CPUs.
If peak temp is staying within the nominal operating limit (89C for X3Ds) and avg is staying well below that point, then you do not have anything at all to worry about.

All my temp measurements with HWiNFO64 “sensors mode only”

I can show you an example with screenshots I get home later.

Of course you can buy a better cooler, I’m always down for that but don’t spend a small fortune for it either. Does not worth it.

ArcticFreezer-III AIOs are maybe the best AIOs on the perf/$$ ratio. Way more than nice performance on a budget. I prefer the nonRGB ones =even cheaper.

A nice thermal paste helps a bit too.

EDIT:

Do not get an AIO for a 7800X3D!

For one, you do not need one. You can get lower temps, but 83 °C is already good enough, and you won't get any extra performance out of it by lowering it further.
For two, I've had issues with my 7800X3D on an AIO, but it runs perfectly under my Dark Rock 4.

Do yourself a favour and don't waste your money. Stop worrying about nothing. ;)

I've had the best luck on the 7800X3D with the Liquid Freezer III 360

I'm sure the LF II is about the same

My H150i elite was 2-3C warmer at slightly more noise.

To be fair though I've only tried the D15, AK620 which you can't buy anymore in the states, U12A. Besides the two AIO.

I mean we're talking a couple C though

Even a 40 usd air cooler should be able to keep it from throttling at stock unless your ambient or case airflow sucks

Those aio coolers are overly overhyped. You only need them for top of the line cpus. Save on electricity(RBG lighting) and get BeQuiet Dark Rock 4 or 5... these coolers will perform well.
