Teardown Photos: Corsair RMe Series RM750e ATX Power Supply

According to https://cultists.network/140/psu-tier-list/ the RM750e is a

Tier A • High-end PSU

Is it the best PSU ever? I don't know... You can decide that for yourself.

I do like the general layout and design to envelope. They made a great use of available volume with daughter cards everywhere!

The first EMI filter stage is nestled underneath the input IEC connector on a littler carrier card.

The best PSU ever is one that does what you need and works reliably.

I have only ever blown one PC power supply. Considering how many PCs I have used (dozens - I still have half a dozen that are operational) and the fact that PC power supplies are by far the cheapest supplies…

lol "Don't turn it on tear it apart" I have never probed an LLC converter so, I'm interested in exploring that.

The controller runs on the secondary side powered of the 5VSB flyback supply and has a gate drive transformer to drive the primary side FETs.

I don't run my desktop 24/7 and when I do uses I'm not running above 100W so it shouldn't be too thermally stressed.

They have made efforts to reduce cost, did they go too far, I don't know.

It would be nice to see plated through holes and a doubled sided PCB, does that really matter, not really.

The 5V and 3V3 rails are post regulated off the 12V supply with synchronous bucks. So hopefully they are well designed.

That is a common choice - most of the highest efficiency supplies are based on one hefty 12V rail and separate DC to DC converters for each rail. For the currents they handle, the losses of a traditional non-synchronous converter in the Schottky diode would easily cost 1.5-2W for every 10A of load - likely enough to cost them a tier on 80plus under high loads.

Single sided PCBs of the paperish variety are traditional in the PSU realm.

The 1000W version has a double sided PCB with plated through holes

Its very densely packed, where does the air flow...

Well, on the upside, being 80Plus Gold, it should be >87% efficient at full load, suggesting the worst case dissipation is about 130W from the unit (or about as much as a performance CPU at full load).

Given the size of the fan and heatsinks, I'd say that's all manageable ... although it may become a dust collector over time.
